As most of you know, I will be leaving New Orleans next week to begin the next phase of my life as a molecular entomologist. Jose' and I will be having a performance salon as a going-away party on Sunday- you and friends of yours are invited- we would love to see you! But first- Earlier that evening, at 7:00pm to 8:30pm, I will be singing a cappella arias from the 17th to 19th centuries at Cafe Rose Nicaud, as the first in a series of classical concerts they will be hosting on select Sunday evenings. Rose Nicaud is on Frenchmen Street, at Royal, just down from Snug Harbor and across the street from the Spotted Cat. The concert is free and supported by Cafe Rose Nicaud; if you would like to see more chamber-scale classical music, please do come down, support the cafe, and let the owners, Kenneth and Melba Ferdinand, know that you appreciate this sort of event! Also, if you are a classical musician who would like to perform, please contact Kenneth (kdf@caferosenicaud.com), and feel free to pass this information on to other musicians you might know. The party will be at 9:00pm, after the Cafe Rose Nicaud concert, and will be a "semi-potluck" performance salon (bring something small to eat or drink if you would like to- vegetarian, please- and something to perform in an informal salon environment if you would like to- no obligation! What a blast! Live music--what a treat. It was more like a party than a regular night in a restaurant. Also knowing so many of the other diners was a real plus. The food was sensational, and the music inspired me to dance. Staying in my seat was not an option. I am glad you, Maria, and Shirley were there to enjoy this wonderful event. New York was another incredible experience. Elena is the best and the most creative dancer I know. I thoroughly enjoyed her workshop and have many new ideas to present in my classes. It was also a super thrill for me to be included as an instructor in her week. I taught 2 debkes and received many thanks from the participants who have been wanting to include debke in their shows. Two successful experiences and now real life intervenes and I must dash out to get a new muffler for my car. Love, ~~Betty --KRUZ komments; It's one of the best evenings I've enjoyed in N.O. It reminded me of the many nights in NYC where most clubs have live music.as do many of the Houston clubs/restaurants. As Betty said " Staying in my seat was not an option." And Betty made sure that the folks bouncing in their seats got up. Urging every one to 'raks': then leading a dabke. EVERYONE was at it, even Khalil, the owner led a dabke. The musical duo 'LAYLI' was as exciting as it could possibly be. Dominic said that this might become a monthly event. This extraordinary, award-winning documen- tary takes viewers inside India's largest prison - known as one of the toughest in the world - and shows the dramatic change brought about by the introduction of Vipassana meditation . Vipassana is an ancient meditation technique, which shows people how to take control of their lives and channel them toward their own good. It is the story of a strong woman named Kiran Bedi , the former Inspector General of Prisons in New Delhi, who strove to transform the notorious Tihar Prison and turn it into an oasis of peace. But most of all it is the story of prison inmates who underwent profound change, and who realized that incarceration is not the end but possibly a fresh start toward an improved and more positive life. These people have shown that reform can work if it is self-reform. Their success has been so dramatic that recently the Indian Government decided to teach Vipassana in all the country's prisons. Other countries, including the U.S., are becoming interested as well. The two women, Israeli filmmakers spent about two weeks inside Tihar Central Prison in New Delhi and Baroda Jail in the Indian state of Gujarat. They interviewed inmates and jail officials, and filmed in places rarely accessible to film crews, whether Indian or foreign. Interesting that you mentioned the movie "Head On" (really called "Against the Wall", which is a much better title... they did this to "Heaven Over Berlin", too- changed to "Wings of Desire" which is cliche and cheesy... why do they change these titles to lame ones rather than just translating them??*). You really MUST see it! It is going to rank in my top films of all time- a German-Expressionist style film, but Turkish, too, and so great. This film just captures so much of the culture clash and where so many young Turkish Germans are, and Jose really felt that it captured his experience as an Ecuadoran-American as well- same love-hate relationship with a beautiful but patriarchal and conservative culture. Plus, it's funny, sad, and beautiful in that uniquely gritty German expressionist way- a love story that only a German Turk could make. So you must, must, must see it! Jose and I are recommending it to everyone. ~Claudia ccopela@tulane.edu *Kz notez; Sometimes translations mean nothing in another language or has another meaning. What you really want is the essence. being multi-lingal (not in Turkish or German) I encounter this feeling often. Nuances, shadings etc often can't be translated. >>¹¹Æƹ¹Æƹ¹ MARIA & 'OZ Maria did a great job of promoting The dance on WWOZ last Sat. evening. Anyone wanting more inof can email me at perchance2dream@hotmail.com This is a great opportunity for groups outside of New Orleans to come in and get the scoop on how to start chapters across the region. Cost of the 5 hour workshop is expected to be $60 with much of the profit going to a local charity. Thanks for plugging the Flamenco workshop. The Amaya workshop was well attended Sat & on Sun. There was a good showing Sat night. I felt a strong sense of community spirit among us and observed people remembering and reconnecting to what MEDA has meant to them and to the Gulf South area these past 25 years . The show program featured MEDA's mission statement and a partial list (maybe 30) of the many fine entertainers/instructors MEDA has brought to Louisiana, etc. (email Marlane for a copy). I felt so proud to see us together this weekend , carrying MEDA's tradition's forward; Amaya attends many seminars in this country & around the world. She was very impressed with us, saying she has not seen another such community effort. Amaya touched so many with her human- ness. Best wishes always, Marlane Drake President MEDA Marlane@cox.net ><> <2> Amaya & Bayou Beledi 2005 (de Kruz) WHAT A SHOW! We must have the best dancers!! Top notch performers. Eye poppping costumes. I don't know where to begin. It would be too lengthy to try to comment on an almost 4 hour show! Being so professionally entertained. . .who cared?! Mini highlights: Noura in a luscious blue/green gown wowiee Her Egyptian styling would have pleased any cairene. Angela in white bedlah & Dominic wowing with every doum & tek! Duet par excellence! Athena in a eye catching red outfit shimmered with her Golden Wings of Isis--breathtaking;(and lets not forget Daria who also graced us Wings of Isis; Shamsi with her stunning eclectic red veil and dance....wheww!; Betty Karam's (in an outrageous RED wig) original Charleston BettyBoopers or is it BellyBoopers (Iona, Melissa & Jeanette had us all admiring, laughing & applauding; All the troupes were excellent, but I was struck by high quality dancing of the Oasis Dance Studios performances & of Jawahir al Noura & What an outstanding Cane dance by Angela & Hayley. and this is but a few. I could write about the otter outstanding performers; Belita, Ameelah, Marlane, Kristina, Mariella or the troupes Daughters of Shaharazade, Kasba Dancers...... and now you understand a 4 hr. show. Kim Kantrell was an excellent emcee-ette It great to have live music. Dominic framing Noura & backing up Angela and his 2 drum solos. Regan, Justin, Jared & James from Oasis in Lafayette, Shelly & Shamsi as a dance/drum duet or as a musical duo for Morrighan (what grace & stage presence). Hurrah for Louisiana's Musicians. Great sound system; new stage backdrops; The professional stage hands; How can Shelly be everywhere? sound- man, stage hand and drumming in between! This events always feel like a reunion. Warm, hugging, laughing, an evening of vivacious excitement. Congrats to MEDA for an excellent evening! ><> <3>Amaya, her husband Pete and I had breakfast, then cruised the French Market. Amaya asked me to join her this morning; she wanted time for us together. Her husband wanted her for himself today but was OK with my going along. He is a spontaneous, deciding at the moment type of person. I had invited them both to tourist with me in the very beginning. I do enjoy that. He had a little honeymoon in mind, to Amaya's surprise. He wanted to go to Bubba's for lunch, do the Natchez tour, the City Tour, and take in Bourbon St. today and the airboat swamp tour tomorrow morning. After they return about noon and we'll go to Commander's Palace for lunch before I take them to the airport. We went out last night together with Teresa, Stephen, and James to Remoulade and down Bourbon St to Snug Harbor for Tim Laughlin's CD release performance. We have had a good time together. I look forward to tomorrow. Amaya is impressed with New Orleans. She is talking of making it her vacation spot vs Las Vegas. Let's hope that means we'll be seeing more of her! Noura was in your shop so we had some time to interact with her and I suggested Croissant de Or before parting ways. I went off to teach my classes for 12:30. Thanks! Middle Eastern dance/shishas/restaurants (now called Mediterranean) are spreading all over the Metro Area. It seems that the West Bank is having a surgence of activity. Some time ago "Cleopatra; Mediterranean Cuisine " opened on Manhattan (off LoPalco) then a bakery appeared two doors down (same owner & yummy); Recently "Jericho Hookah & Mediterranean Cafe' opened on Terry Parkway. And the latest is "Medusa" on Manhattan in the same shopping strip (Manhattan Square) as Cleopatra. Medusa has dancing on Thursdays with Diva Mubarak. & Gretchen 8:30 to 11. I don't know if dancers will vary. We were there for their premiere last Thursday. Finding the place is a little confusing. It's a Sports Bar VAULT on your right (big RED letters) I met the owner Adam from Istanbul. A handsome grey haired man ( ala Dr. Richard). Adam dancing ala Turk! I wanted to tip him! Good food. Truly mediterranean. Greek, Turkish, Middle Eastern. A lively place. It felt like a Greek taverna. We were there 'til 11:30. Hop on over. I find the drive over (about 20 min) to the West Bank a treat. I often return by Canal Ferry. There's always parking and it's free. They seem to have later dancing hours on the W/Bank. Dancing at Jericho begins around 10 p & is open way, way late! ie. you can eat & drink 'til the sun comes up. Cleopatra & The Bakery closed around 10 p.
